Park Heung-sun Director of Solsongju Co. & Holder of Gyeongnam Intangible Cultural Property
Introduction
I lived in Hamyang-eup and came to Gaepyeong Village in Hamyang Jigu-myeon — a prestigious yangban family of the Hadong Jeong clan — through an introduction by my father.
I learned how to make liquor from my mother-in-law, and upon her recommendation that the Hadong Jeong family’s liquor was well-known, I started my business in earnest.
My mother-in-law always ate light meals and, even in her old age, enjoyed a glass of Solsongju every evening and lived over 100 years. From long ago, our home always welcomed guests with sincerity, offering even a sip of water or sharing good things. I have inherited that heart, and I hope that the liquor I brew with care will remain warmly in people’s hearts as well.

What to expect while doing this

Gaepyeong Village in Hamyang has long been known as a village of scholars and literati, and today more than 60 old houses over 100 years old remain.
Here, the family of Nuljae Jeong Jaebum, the 13th-generation descendant of Il-du Jeong Yeo-chang and former magistrate of Jecheon, brewed liquor for ancestral rites and guests.
I go to the brewery every morning and spend the whole day there.
Whenever I see people who come all the way to Hamyang to taste our liquor, or those who come back again after trying it once, I feel deeply grateful. And when guests tell me “It’s really delicious,” all my fatigue of the day disappears and I am determined to keep brewing good liquor.

Q. Introduce the product you’re offering with Greenear.

At Solhyangjae you can meet two of our liquors.
The first is “Solsongju”, a 13-degree traditional medicinal liquor fermented and aged with Hamyang rice, pine sprouts (songsoon), and nuruk (traditional starter). “Sol” means pine, containing the scent of pine sprouts and the essence of nature.
Solsongju has been served at significant national events since the 2007 Inter-Korean Summit, and in 2019 it was selected as the President’s Lunar New Year gift and delivered to over ten thousand national merit recipients. In this way, Solsongju has accompanied many meaningful occasions.
It is filtered clear, leaving a subtle pine aroma as an aftertaste. It is not overly sweet but clean and fresh. Enjoying it chilled makes the pine scent spread more delicately and refreshingly.
The second liquor is “Damsol.”
Like its name “clear pine,” it is a premium 40-degree liqueur brewed with pure essence. Pine sprout liquor was traditionally enjoyed in noble families, and we have newly created it in a modern way.
Using rice, nuruk, and pine sprouts as main ingredients, it is fermented for about 20 days, then carefully distilled and aged long to remove off-flavors and deepen the aroma. Finally, natural honey is added, blending a clean finish with pine fragrance to leave a deep aftertaste.
As a premium liquor combining tradition and modern sensibility, Damsol has won many awards at domestic and international liquor competitions, including the Grand Prize in the Liqueur Category at the 2015 Korea Traditional Liquor Awards, the Grand Prize in the 2016 Korea Liquor Awards, and the Gold Medal at the 2016 Monde Selection in Belgium.
Q. What does nature mean to you?

For me, nature is a source of gratitude and healing. Hamyang’s soil is rich in germanium, which makes grains grow well and taste excellent, so we use rice from here. Around Gaepyeong Village and the mountains there are many pine trees, which is why it seems natural that pine sprouts have been used for brewing liquor since long ago.
As befits the hometown of scholars, there are many seowon and pavilions here, creating a beautiful landscape. When my mind is complicated, I often go to Goyeonjeong in Yongchu Valley to calm my heart and gain new strength.
Q. What do you want people to take away from the experience and healing you provide?

For me, liquor is a warm bridge that connects people. Sharing a glass brings laughter and conversation, closing emotional distances and sparking new ideas and friendships.
I think that liquors like Damsol and Solsongju, made with sincerity and stories, are companions that make shared moments special.
I hope you will feel the scent of pine, the essence of nature, and the harmony of tradition contained in our Solsongju and Damsol at Solhyangjae, and enjoy a truly special time.
