Introduction

0c6d56308bb0e.jpg

I am the director of ROI Art Studio located in Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do, and a minhwa (Korean folk painting) artist. My work is not just about reproducing tradition. I focus on reinterpreting stories we can relate to today, using minhwa as a language. By adding a modern touch to the symbols and techniques of traditional minhwa, I create a unique worldview where the past and present coexist in my paintings.

I believe that art has the power to bring happiness to people.

Minhwa is not just about reviving tradition—it can also deliver empathy, comfort, and healing to those living in the present.

I’m always grateful to be able to share this joy through something I love and do well.

Interview

Q. What are some of your most memorable places and experiences in nature in Korea?

I was born and raised in Gunsan, and the sea has always been part of my life. Naturally, the sea and sunsets of Gunsan have found their way into my paintings. Even the same scenery looks different depending on my mood, constantly offering new inspiration. Those moments always made me want to paint, and so my work reflects a world where nature, time, and space coexist.

Q.  What does nature mean to you?

Ever-changing nature is a mirror of my emotions and the greatest source of color and stories in my work. In that space, I discover moments where time and place overlap. I try to capture those experiences in my paintings and let them guide the direction of my work.

Q. What do you want people to take away from the experience and healing you provide?

I hope people feel inspired by the imagination and new worlds in my artwork.

My paintings are based on fairytale-like imagination and colors, capturing moments I wish to experience or dream of.

Through that, I hope viewers recall their own stories and become travelers beyond time and space. May the world in my paintings become a small comfort and a pair of wings for your imagination—something that lingers with you for a long time.
