Midnight Bookstore Concert in a Closed Bookstore
"The experience of watching the Kyobo Book Centre —a place I visit so often— transform into a magical concert hall at midnight was simply breathtaking. The book excerpts introduced between the pieces paired so perfectly with the music that it truly touched my heart. The pairing of the mango rice castella cake and the refreshing peach oolong tea was the absolute taste of summer. It was the ultimate restful escape, entirely dedicated to myself away from my busy daily life." Participant, Park ** |
"I booked this as a pre-anniversary surprise for my wife, and it was truly wonderful. The meticulous yet warm performance filled the quiet bookstore, bringing pure healing. During Part 2, when author Han Kang's Human Acts was paired with Schubert's Death and the Maiden, the immersion was so intense I could barely breathe. Walking through the dimly lit, tranquil aisles afterward to pick out books with my wife is a peaceful memory that will stay with me for a very long time." Participant, Han ** |

Daejeon • Kyobo Book Centre • Classical Concert

Daejeon feels like a cozy fortress
embraced by surrounding mountains.
We believe this geographical characteristic mirrors
the historical "Seonbi" (traditional scholar) spirit
—a spirit of protecting one's mind
from external hardships and dedicating
oneself to learning.
We noticed that this meticulous,
analytical Seonbi mindset has evolved
into the warm modern science of today's Daejeon.
To convey the heart of Daejeon
—which explores infinite possibilities
for humanity rather than cold analysis—
through classical melodies,
we have hosted this star-studded classical concert
in partnership with Kyobo Book Centre,
today's treasure trove of knowledge.

Episode #1: The Artists |

Cho Yu-rim
I always prepare with my absolute best, but depending on the venue conditions or my condition that day, there are times it doesn't go as beautifully as expected. On the other hand, thanks to the audience's response or the acoustics, some performances end up being profoundly moving.
I believe music itself is an art of creating 'the moment.' I consider all these variables part of the day's performance; while I think of minor areas to improve, I am always deeply grateful.

" I hope my performance brings comfort to someone "

Cho Yong-deuk
I love performing together with others and possess an optimistic personality, enjoying reading and traveling in my spare time. I feel immense joy when I take charge of a part within a complex musical structure and move toward musical perfection.

" I hope this brings peace of mind and musical joy, and at times, helps you calmly untangle a complicated heart. "

Pyo Hyun-joo
I am cellist Pyo Hyun-joo, raised in the warm embrace of Daejeon and spending my life alongside the cello. I hope that for the moments you listen to my performance, you can completely immerse yourself in the music and temporarily lay down your worries and anxieties. I hope it becomes an experience where your mind rests and feels comforted, even if just for a short time. Just as I found solace in nature, I wish for my music to be a restful break for someone, and a small spark of courage to stand up again for another.

"The cello most closely resembles the human voice, comforting the heart with its warm, deep sound."

Kim Ki-nam
Expressing a diverse range of emotions through the delicate and rich timbre of string instruments always feels fresh and marvelous to me. Especially during ensemble performances, creating a rich sound through harmony with other instruments brings a unique kind of emotion distinct from a solo performance.

" I feel the greatest happiness when breathing together with the audience on stage to complete a performance."
Episode #2: Kyobo Book Centre Daejeon Branch |
A Space Where Anyone Can Touch and Read Books
Daejeon—South Korea's scientific capital and a central hub for administration and education—is a city where diverse generations and cultures coexist. Grounded in these unique characteristics, the Kyobo Book Centre Daejeon branch has presented a colorful variety of cultural programs in collaboration with local artists, cultural institutions, and publishers.
Cultural activities built together with the community—such as author meet-and-greets, book talks, exhibitions, and concerts—reach beyond the boundaries of a traditional bookstore to enrich the cultural lives of citizens. This Midnight Bookstore Concert serves as another cultural venue connecting the region and its people, offering a special experience that can only be found in a bookstore on a summer night.
Episode #3: Neo Strings Ensemble with Clarinetist Jung Young-hee |

A Team That Has Explored the Essence of Chamber Music and the Depth of Ensemble for 25 Years
Consisting of violinists Cho Yu-rim and Kim Ki-nam, violist Cho Yong-deuk, and cellist Pyo Hyun-joo, the Neo Strings String Quartet Ensemble has silently explored the essence of chamber music and the depth of ensemble harmony for the past 25 years. Engaging in a wide range of activities from regular concerts to youth concerts and regional tours, they have built their own musical world to ensure classical music does not remain confined to specific stages but naturally permeates daily life.
Starting with an invitation to the Daejeon Citizen's Hall Guest Series in 2004, they have flexibly expanded the boundaries between music and visual arts through collaborations with the Daejeon Culture and Arts Center 'String Festival', the Daejeon Museum of Art, and the Lee Ungno Museum, maintaining a unique presence within the local cultural and arts scene.
Most of all, the true value of Neo Strings lies in their steady footsteps toward places in need of music. They have delivered the warm comfort of music across various spaces, including over 100 outreach concerts held at the hospice ward of Daejeon St. Mary's Hospital, rehabilitation centers, and welfare facilities.
Clarinetist Jung Young-hee, who joins for the clarinet collaboration, is currently an official member of the Chungnam Philharmonic Orchestra and an executive member of the Daejeon Clarinet Choir, leaving a deep impression on the local music scene through her active performances.
