I am Pyo Hyun-joo, a cellist who grew up in the warm embrace of Daejeon and has walked alongside the cello my entire life. Having communicated through music on stages and in classrooms for 20 years, my deepest wish now is for my music to become a gentle resonance and a warm, comforting presence in someone’s heart.

Interview

Q. What is your most memorable place and experience in Korea’s nature?

The West Sea is a place I can visit effortlessly due to its close proximity to Daejeon, yet no matter how many times I return, it always restores peace to my mind.

In particular, watching the sunset at Anmyeondo Island—whose name beautifully carries the meaning of 'an island where one rests peacefully'—makes me feel as though my weary days are being gently comforted. As I gaze at the horizon dyed in shades of gold and purple, I can briefly forget my tangled thoughts and completely immerse myself in the consolation that nature provide

Q. What does nature mean to you?

To me, nature is the driving force that keeps me moving forward, and a sanctuary that offers comfort whenever I feel exhausted or lonely. Being highly sensitive to the shifting of the four seasons, I draw fresh energy from the distinct air and changing landscapes of each period. Immersing myself in nature allows me to reflect more deeply upon myself and gives me the strength to take the next step forward.

Q. What do you hope people feel when they listen to your performance?

For the brief moments they listen to my music, I hope people can fully immerse themselves in the performance and set aside their individual worries and anxieties. I wish for it to be an experience where their minds can rest and find true comfort, even if only for a short while. Just as I received consolation from nature, I hope my performance can serve as a restful haven for someone, and a spark of courage for someone else to find their strength again.
