Greenear Signature Seasonal Course 026
Midnight Bookstore Concert: Held behind the closed doors of the bookstore.
"I came with my parents, and everything from the thoughtfully prepared snacks to the private stroll through the bookstore made us feel truly cherished. It was a precious time where we could feel warmth, love, and comfort." Participant Lee |
"Listening to Korean traditional music in such a serene bookstore was beyond anything I could have imagined. The warm melodies blended with the scent of books, and it felt as if my soul was being gently comforted. It was a warm and fluttering night, like watching wish lanterns drift across a cherry blossom-filled sky." Participant Kim |
Cherry blossoms embroidering the night sky, melodies blooming upon the bookshelves

Beneath the cherry blossoms
that adorn the night sky,
In the silent sanctuary of a
bookstore after hours,
A time where
only music begins to shimmer.
Woven through the scent of wisdom
held within the books,
The melodies of Gugak
—braided from the gentle breeze—
Awaken the night as shyly and freshly
As the very first flower bud of spring.
Feel the fluttering pulse of life awakening
from winter’s long slumber.
Immerse yourself in deep,
solitary reflection,
Or share the joy of blooming spring
within one another's hearts
Through a precious gaze
with someone you love.

A magical moment of
comfort and inspiration,
where books, music,
and the essence of spring intertwine.

of a closed bookstore.
We cordially invite you
to this unforgettable night.

Busan | Kyobo Book Centre | Gugak (Korean Traditional Music)

During the Korean War,
countless refugees
including many artists
fled to Busan.
They settled in Gwangbok-dong,
where they tirelessly
continued their creative pursuits.
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s,
Nampodong emerged
as the heart of the arts, a place
where artistic passion truly flourished.
To illuminate Busan’s rich artistic history
and revive the emotions of that era,
we have partnered with Kyobo Book Centre,
today’s treasure trove of knowledge,
to host a Gugak (Korean traditional music)
performance that embroiders the night sky.
In this Midnight Bookstore Concert,
we will perform 'Baetnorae' (Boating Song) and
'Nae Nara Daehan' (My Country, Korea)
to reflect the unique geography and
profound history of Busan.

| Episode #1 Artist |

Park - Sohyun
The Gayageum is an instrument where the sound is created by directly plucking and pressing the strings with my fingertips. Therefore, with every performance, the notes shift subtly according to the strength in my hands and the emotions I feel in that moment. Even when playing the same piece, the resonance feels different depending on my state of mind or the unique atmosphere of the stage.
In particular, I believe the most captivating aspects of the Gayageum are the Nonghyeon (vibrato) and the resonance created by pressing the strings. My emotions are naturally woven into those delicate tremors and lingering echoes. When that sound finally reaches the audience, I find the greatest fulfillment as a performer.

"For me, playing the Gayageum is more than just performing a piece; it is a meaningful time to express the emotions and energy of the moment through sound and to share that experience with the audience."

Kwak - Hyangah
Since the Daegeum and Sogeum (Korean bamboo flutes) create sound through the breath, I feel that my own respiration and emotions are naturally infused into the music every time I play. Even with the same melody, the texture of the sound shifts depending on my state of mind or the flow of my breath.
I believe the true charm of these instruments lies in how they translate the raw emotions of the moment directly into music.

"When my heart is conveyed through music even without words—that is the moment I find the greatest fulfillment as a performer."

Ahn - Yiseo
Gugak is more than just music; it is our unique heritage that captures the joys and sorrows of life more profoundly than any other genre. We strive to look into and empathize with the lives of our audience through our own language and melodies. Perhaps as a result of such efforts, many people shed tears or greet us with bright smiles after the performance.
In those moments, I feel that my fellow members and I are on the right path, and it instills in me an even greater sense of responsibility.

"I hope that through my music, you can find a sense of liberation from the weariness of daily life."
| Episode #2 Kyobo Book Centre Busan |
A Space Where Anyone Can Touch and Read Books
Based on the founder's philosophy, “People make books, and books make people,” Kyobo Book Centre Busan is a welcoming space for everyone. The bookstore features a unique split-level architecture, beautifully enclosed by deep brown wooden bookshelves.
As you step into the high-ceilinged first floor, the Complete Collection of World Literature series stretches along the wall from the entrance. The shelves are filled with literature and art, while the large floor-to-ceiling windows act as a magnificent frame—capturing the rainy streets on somber days and the brilliant, clear sky on sunny ones.
| Episode #3 Gugak Group: Ippeul |

Delivering melodies braided from the gentle breeze.
The name 'Ippeul' is a phonetic representation of Hwangjong (E♭), the fundamental tone of Korean traditional music. It symbolizes the group's ambition to serve as the foundational root for a new era of music.
Ippeul is a creative Gugak ensemble that expresses the exhilarating spirit and joy (Heung) of Korean music through a harmonious blend of song, dance, and instrumental performance. While deeply rooted in tradition, they perform trendy Korean music that never loses touch with modern sensibilities.
